Dr. Lund was asked to write for the 200th birthday of Joseph Smith a history of the first
eleven years of the Prophet’s life. The article was published in the 2006 LDS Church Almanac
and titled “Joseph Smith Before Palmyra.” Dr. Lund’s latest research into the life of Joseph
Smith has resulted in a new book titled, Joseph Smith and the Geography of the Book of
Mormon. This is a companion volume to his book on Mesoamerica and the Book of Mormon: Is
This The Place? The new book establishes that Joseph Smith clearly taught and published to the
world that the primary American events in the Book of Mormon occurred in Southern Mexico
and the Guatemala of 1842. Research into the Times and Seasons newspaper while Joseph was
the editor showed that Joseph accepted all of North and South America and the isles of the sea in
the western hemisphere as the new Promised Land. Included in the new book are the results of a
Comprehensive Author Identification Study. Two years of research established that Joseph
Smith authored the editorials stating that the City of Zarahemla was in the Guatemala of 1842
and the “small or narrow neck of land” was in Central America.
